Does anyone else think that psychologists, self-help authors, natural healers, & 90% of weight loss programs?

admin | July 27th, 2009 | Weight Loss Psychology

do nothing more than stimulate a temporary feeling, based on a person’s hope, and desire that things will/can be better–guaranteeing that people will fall down again, when reality kicks in, and require them a new hope stimulus? Can negative thinking really be permanetley changed, or is this just something we all like to beleive is true? Is psychology at the same level fundamentally as faith healing–based on nothing more that hope?–Practiced by people who got their degrees in part because they are not depressed like the people they strive to help–who could never become psychologists. Are we all just riding the hope high, falsley believing that things will be better, as we constantly change what we believe in–while paying as little attention as possible to the false hopes that did not bring us permanent happiness?

First of all, I have met many therapists who were helped through their problems and became therapists to help others. Psychologists are all human beings too, and they fall prey to the same problems as everyone else.
It is not just a matter of hope. People have to work to make life work for them or to get along. Construction takes effort; destruction and deterioration occurs from lack of effort to create a structure.
Nothing is easy; things only look easy because people spend a lot of time perfecting the craft of making things happen.
So it is not just a matter of hope and belief, it is understanding the way things are and how to progress.
Happiness is overrated and an elusive concept. I am not looking for happiness, I am looking for progress and evolution.

i will agree on most of that, most of it is just a bunch of shit, but it is based on trying to change someones thoughts by making them do things that will lead them to change, not just trying to change them, period.
i particularly agree that most psychologists are just a bunch of idiots who know nothing about what is going on in the person who they are trying to help, but i also think that some have gone through it and know what it is like.
i want to be a psychologist and i will be one of the minority who have been through most of it.

1 Psychology is the scientific examination of the mind and behaviour humans and other animals.

2 You are confusing those who use ‘complimentary and alternative medicines – most are only loosely based on the study of the human mind – many are little more than religion; with those have scientific skills.

3 There are many which are based on scientific study and work.

While it’s a profound view, I think it’s rather nihilistic. All of the things you listed – yes, even weight loss programs – require the commitment and cooperation of the person partaking in them.
